Ausbildungsfahrlehrer (training-grade driving instructor)
Also known as: Trainer instructor · Fahrlehrer-Ausbilder
An Ausbildungsfahrlehrer is a German driving instructor with a special qualification under the Driving Instructor Act (FahrlG, § 16) who is authorised to supervise instructor candidates during their practical training phase.
The role of the Ausbildungsfahrlehrer is set out in Germany’s Driving Instructor Act (FahrlG). Key prerequisites:
- Several years of professional experience as a driving instructor,
- A successfully completed additional qualification course,
- Active practice in a recognised training driving school (Ausbildungsfahrschule).
Ausbildungsfahrlehrer accompany instructor candidates through the practical phase of their training, before those candidates obtain their own driving-instructor licence. The role carries direct responsibility for the quality of the next generation of driving instructors.
Recognition as Ausbildungsfahrlehrer is granted by the licensing authority of the relevant federal state (Bundesland). Outside Germany there is no direct equivalent — the closest analogues are mentor-instructor or supervising-instructor roles in Austria and Switzerland, but the German status is a formal regulatory qualification rather than a working job title. The Fahrlehrerverband publishes guidance on the qualification path.
