B197

Also known as: Code 197

B197 is Germany's Code 197 manual-transmission allowance: pass the practical exam in an automatic, complete at least 10 manual-driving lessons and a manual sign-off, and receive a full Klasse B with manual privileges.

The introduction of code 197 removed the binary split between an “automatic-only” and “manual” driving licence in Germany for new Klasse B candidates. The previous “automatic only” code (78) is no longer the default for trainees who want flexibility.

B197 requirements:

  • Practical test taken in an automatic vehicle,
  • At least 10 driving lessons in a manual vehicle before the exam,
  • A manual-vehicle sign-off arranged by the driving school (no separate TÜV appointment).

Candidates who fulfil B197 receive a Klasse B licence without the code-78 restriction — full manual driving privileges. Practical effect: students who struggle with the clutch can take the exam on an automatic but retain the option to drive manuals later.
