Klasse B (Class B)

Also known as: Class B German driving licence · German car licence

Klasse B is Germany's standard car driving licence: motor vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight, max. 8 passenger seats, plus trailers up to 750 kg. Available from 17 (BF17) or 18 onwards.

Klasse B (Category B) covers, per § 6 FeV:

  • Motor vehicles with a gross weight up to 3,500 kg,
  • Designed for a maximum of eight passenger seats besides the driver,
  • Including trailers up to 750 kg gross weight,
  • Trailers above 750 kg if the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg.

Requirements include a minimum age of 18 (or 17 with BF17 — Begleitetes Fahren), an eyesight test, a first-aid course, and passing the theory and practical exams.

Klasse B is by far the most common driving licence category in Germany. After issue, holders are subject to a two-year probationary period (Probezeit).
