Überlandfahrt (overland lesson)

Also known as: Overland special-purpose lesson · Rural-road lesson · Landstraßenfahrt

The Überlandfahrt is one of the three German Sonderfahrt types in Klasse B: five mandatory hours on federal, state, or county roads. Focus areas are higher speeds, overtaking, and curve anticipation.

The Überlandfahrt is the most common Sonderfahrt type and bridges the gap between in-town traffic and the motorway. Required content from Annex 3 of the Driver-Training Ordinance (FahrschAusbO):

  • Driving on federal, state, or county roads outside built-up areas,
  • Speeds between 70 and 100 km/h,
  • Overtaking manoeuvres with and without oncoming traffic,
  • Curves with unknown curvature progression,
  • Switching between different road types (e.g. county road to federal road).

The five mandatory hours can be split across several appointments. In practice, the Überlandfahrt is often the first Sonderfahrt — competences such as safe following distance and stable lane keeping develop most naturally there before motorway speeds add another layer.

For UK or US readers: there is no direct equivalent in those licensing systems. The closest analogue is a structured “country roads” lesson, but no curriculum mandates a specific hour count.
